Class Management

Collaborating with different teachers gave me the opportunity to learn various class management techniques. Of course, applying those techniques vary with the class demographics. There is no unique technique that can be applied to every situation. A certain technique can be effective with one group of students and not necessarily affect another group. Here are some steps that I have learned through many years of teaching experience.

  • Develop a set of written expectations that students can always refer to.

  • Be consistent!

  • Be patient with your students and with yourself.

  • Provide short and clear instructions. Use the first chunk of your class for lectures or presentations, then get the kids working on their own.
"Tell me and I will forget. Teach me and I will remember.
Involve me and I will learn.", Benjamin Franklin

  • Break the class period into different activities. Each activity should smoothly blend into the next one.

  • Keep all students actively involved. While students present their work, involve the other students in evaluating it.

  • Keep your sense of perspective and your sense of humor.

  • Know when to ask for help.

It is also my goal to create a positive environment where students learn positive behaviour through my own example.

  • Reinforce good behaviour with positive affirmation, while trying to implement the notion of doing ‘good’ for the sake of goodness, rather than for reward.

  • Stay patient!

  • Remain Consistent! Set the tone of the classroom with consistency so that students know what to expect and how they are expected to behave.

  • Provide consequences that are directly linked to their actions, rather than punishing students with unrelated methods. That way they can mindfully reflect on their actions and understand the ramifications of them.

  • Have students reflect on their actions and provide a rationale for your own actions as a teacher.

It is recommended to take these steps early in the year to promote effective classroom management.
